Royals Sweep Cougars Opening Weekend
The Victoria Royals swept the visiting Prince George Cougars to open the season with a pair of wins this past weekend. The Royals edged the Cougars 2-1 in a shoot out Friday, followed by a 5-1 victory Saturday night.
Special teams played a factor Saturday as Victoria scored 3 power play goals, plus 2 while short handed – and the penalty killing was perfect both nights.
Post Game Interview: Head Coach Dan Price:
Saturday, Victoria had 5 different goal scorers as Ralph Jarratt, Dino Kambietz and Kaid Oliver had a goal and assist each. Singles came from D-Jay Jerome and Tyler Lees.
Griffen Outhouse earned the victory both nights.
Up next the Royals host the Blazers Friday and Saturday night.
Get Shorty: In tonight’s contest, Royals’ forwards Kaid Oliver and Tyler Lees each scored shorthanded goals in the first period. This marks the fifth time in Royals’ history that the club has scored two shorthanded goals in a game. In three of those five contests the two shorthanded markers were recorded in the same period.
Power Up: The Royals scored three times while on the powerplay in tonight’s game. This marks the 34th time in seven plus years, that the team has scored three or more goals on the man-advantage in a game. The franchise record for most powerplay goals in a single game is five, which took place in a 6-4 win over the Vancouver Giants on February 24, 2017.
Outstanding Outhouse: Victoria netminder Griffen Outhouse was solid as he stopped 53 of the 55 shots he faced on opening weekend. Outhouse has posted a record 2-0-0-0 with a goals against average of 1.02 and a save percentage of 0.964%.
BC Division: Including this weekend’s games against the Cougars, the Royals will play 10 of their first 11 contests against teams from the BC Division. Their lone out of division game during that span is against the Swift Current Broncos on October 17th.
Up Next: Victoria continues their four game homestand on Friday, September 28th and Saturday, September 29th against the Kamloops Blazers . Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. for both games.
