The Vancouver Giants took game one of the best of seven playoff series with a 2-1 road win over the Victoria Royals.
All the goals came in the second period, as Giants Milos Roman opened the scoring by following up a Ty Ronning 2 on 1 chance.
Royals Tanner Kaspick fired home a shot from the slot to tie the game at 1-1.

Late in the frame, Matt Barberis tipped a Brennan Riddle for the eventual game winner.

Both clubs went 0 for 4 on the power play.
Early in the first, Giants Darian Skeoch got 5 minutes and a game misconduct for a check to the head of Royals Dino Kambietz, who did not return to the game.
Former Royal Jared Dmytriw was unable to score on a penalty shot in the first period.

Victoria was without Tyler Soy (92pts), Lane Zablocki (serving final of a two game suspension), plus defenseman Ralph Jarratt and Scott Walford.

ROYALS GAME NOTES:
Coastal Clash – This opening first round series marks the first time in Victoria history that these two clubs have met in the playoffs. The Royals/Chilliwack Bruins’ franchise has played in three playoffs series against the Giants, with the last series occurring back in 2008.
Series Opener – Tonight’s loss is the first time since the team relocated to Vancouver Island that the Royals have lost Game 1 when they possess home ice advantage in the series. Victoria now holds a record of 4-1-0-0 in those Game 1’s. The club has outscored its opponents 15-11 in those opening games of a series.
A Night of Firsts – Victoria skaters Tarun Fizer, Dino Kambeitz, Igor Martynov and Matthew Smith all played in their first career WHL playoff game tonight.
We’ve Done This Before – Multiple Royals’ took part in their first playoff game as a Royal in Braydon Buziak, Jeff de Wit, Jared Freadrich, Noah Gregor, Andrei Grishakov, Kade Jensen and Tanner Kaspick. Buziak (23), de Wit (41), Freadrich (19), Gregor (17), Grishakov (3), Jensen (4), and Kaspick (37) all have previous playoff experience with other WHL teams.
Penalty Shot – Tonight’s penalty shot awarded to former Royal and current Giants’ forward Jared Dmytriw marked the third post-season penalty shot in Victoria history. The most recent playoff penalty shot occurred in Game 4 of the 2015 WHL Playoffs.
