Victoria forward earns nod to Team WHL.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals would like to congratulate forward Matthew Phillips on being named to Team WHL’s roster for the upcoming CIBC Canada Russia Series.
Team WHL faces Team Russia for the first two games of the annual series. Moose Jaw, SK will kick-off the series on Monday, November 6th, while Swift Current, SK will welcome the WHL All-Stars and Team Russia for the second game on Tuesday, November 7th.
The native of Calgary, AB has been named to Team WHL after he has recorded a team high 24 points (9g-15a) in Victoria’s opening 10 games of the season. Phillips sits second in the WHL in points (24), first in powerplay assists (10) and shorthanded goals (2), and third in both goals (9) and assists (15).
This past summer, Phillips was one of 42 players who attended Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp for the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championships.
The 5-7, 155 lb forward registered a career year last season where he recorded 90 points (50g-40a) through 70 games and became the first Royals’ player in team history to score 50 goals. Phillips was also named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team at the end of the 2016-17 season. Philips concluded the 2016-17 season with the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League and tallied one assist in one regular season contest, and took part in two playoff games.
The Calgary Flames, Phillips hometown team, selected the forward in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Phillips is the seventh player from the Royals’ franchise to play in the CIBC Canada Russia Series. Most recently, forward Tyler Soy took part in the event last year. Defenceman Joe Hicketts played for Team WHL in both 2014 and 2015, while forwards Steven Hodges, Kevin Sundher, Ryan Howse and Mark Santorelli competed at the event in 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2007, respectively.
The six-game series features regional league teams of Canadian National Junior Team candidates competing against the Russian National Junior Team. For the fourth straight season, the event will open with two games in the WHL.
The 2017 CIBC Canada Russia series is supported by CHL associate sponsors Cooper Tire, autoTRADER.ca and Sherwin-Williams. All games will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

Victoria will continue their season long seven-game road trip tomorrow night against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The game is slated to start at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time at Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB.
The Royals return home on Saturday, October 28th and Sunday, October 29th to face the Vancouver Giants. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday and 3:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
