Royals Settle for Split With Blazers, Fall 3-1 Saturday
Dylan Ferguson made 36 saves and Deven Sideroff scored a goal and assist to pace the visiting Kamloops Blazers past the Victoria Royals 3-1 Saturday night, earning a split in the two game set.
“It was a hard fought game,” said Royals Head Coach Dave Lowry,
The Royals had won 2-1 in shoot out one night earlier and now sit 4th in the BC Division, 2 back of the Rockets.
Saturday, the Blazers scored all three goals with the man advantage, all of which were in the final minute of each period, going 3 for 7 on the night.
Kamloops led 1-0 after 20 minutes, and 2-1 after 40.
Victoria out shot their opponents 37-36, after only generating 21 shots one night earlier.
“I liked the urgency in our game, I thought we had some desperation – we generated more than enough chances to win a hockey game.” Added Lowry.
Eric Florchuk scored the lone goal for Victoria, tying the game at 1-1 early in the middle frame.
Victoria had a 1:17, 5 on 3 power play in the 2nd but were unable to solve Ferguson, who hails from Lantzville.
“He was good tonight, we had lots of good looks.” said Lowry.
Victoria went 0 for 6 on the night on the power play.
“We had a good push and got a lot of pucks to the net, but we didn’t get the second chances,” said Royals captain Ryan Gagnon.
Collin Shirley and Rudolph Balcers scored the other goals for Kamloops, while defenseman Joe Gatenby colleted a pair of assists.
Royals netminder Griffen Outhouse stopped 33 shots to earn second star honours.
Victoria star forward Tyler Soy did not finish the game, and neither did Kamloops leading scorer Sideroff – both Anaheim Ducks prospects.
The Royals wrapped up their 7 game home stand with a 4-3 record, and concluded a stretch of 4 games in 5 nights going (1-3).
Victoria now heads to Alberta for stops in Medicine Hat Wednesday, Lethbridge Friday and Kootenay on Saturday.
