Royals Drop Winterhawks 5-1 Tuesday
Ryan Peckford scored twice and added an assist while Matthew Phillips had 3 helpers to pace the Victoria Royals past the visiting Portland Winterhawks 5-1 Tuesday night.
Victoria jumped to a 3-0 first period lead scoring goals from in tight.
“The key tonight was we didn’t spot a team a 2 goal and have to fight back…” said Royals Head Coach Dave Lowry,
“Look were we scored (the goals), we finally got pucks to the net, we finally stayed at the net.”
The Royals were 2 for 8 on the power play, while the Winterhawks went 1 for 2.
“I thought our discipline was outstanding, we got rewarded for it tonight…when we’re skating and playing whistle to whistle we’re a pretty good team.” Said Lowry.
Jack Walker a goal an assist, as Victoria also got goals from Dante Hannoun and Carter Folk.
Griffen Outhouse made 32 saves for his 17th win, while Cole Kehyler was 29 for 34.
It was also the debut of forward Vladimir Bobylev, back from the KHL who was very noticeable, but was held off the scoresheet.
“He balanced out our attack and gave us some size up the middle…” added Lowry
The Winterhawks’ lone goal was registered by Joachim Blichfeld, who had their 3 game win streak snapped.
In the win, three Royals extended their point scoring streaks. Matthew Phillips’ streak now sits at 7 games, with 15 points (7g-8a) during that span. Regan Nagy has tallied a point in four straight (3g-1a) contests, while Walker has registered eight points (3g-5a) in his previous five matches.
Royals’ goalie Griffen Outhouse stopped 32 of the 33 shots he faced. Portland’s Cole Kehler turned aside 29 of the 34 shots fired his way.
Victoria is now 1-1-1-0 in the season series after falling Friday in overtime 5-4 in Portland, and 4-2 back on Nov. 25th.
Royals Captain Ryan Gagnon served the final of his 4 game suspension.
Victoria is 4th in the BC Division, and remain 3 back of Kamloops and Kelowna.
The Royals will look to sweep the two game set in Victoria tonight.
