Royals Edge Cougars 2-1 Saturday
The visiting Victoria Royals defeated the Prince George Cougars Saturday night 2-1, earning a split of the two game set, after falling 4-2 one night earlier.
“We killed penalties, scored on the power play and our goaltender was first star.” said Head Coach Dave Lowry on what contributed to the win.
The Royals snapped a 4 game losing streak, while knocking off the #6 ranked club in the CHL.
“When you’ve gone through a stretch where we haven’t won in a few games, we needed to make sure we had some urgency and desperation.” added Lowry,
The Royals lost defenseman Ryan Gagnon to a charging major and game misconduct in the first period after a hit on Bartek Bison.
“Sometimes you look for defining moments, hopefully we can use this game tonight to really have an understanding of how hard you have to play…”
Jack Walker had a pair of assists, while getting goals from rookie defenseman Mitchell Prowse and sophomore forward Ryan Peckford both in the middle frame.
Griffen Outhouse made 31 saves for the win, while Ty Edmonds took the loss allowing 2 goals on 28 shots.
Victoria’s penalty killers stopped all 7 Prince George man advantages, while the Royals went 1 for 5 on the power play.
“We did a lot of good things tonight, I felt guys were sacrificing bodies…We talked this morning that we need guys to do whatever it takes to win a hockey game…”
After a scoreless first, Victoria got the only two goals of the second period while out shooting their hosts 16-6 in the middle frame.
Prince George reciprocated the shots in the third, with the only goal beating Outhouse off the stick of Kody McDonald, however his initial shot knocked the netminders helmet off but the rebound shot and goal stood.
“They deemed that it was an immediate play…I felt the play should’ve been blown dead right off the bat…you want the play stopped, it’s about player safety.” commented Lowry
Victoria remains 4th in the BC Division, remaining 1 point behind both Kamloops and Kelowna who were also victorious.
The 5 game in 9 night road trip continues in Spokane Wednesday.
