The ALS Ice bucket challenge helped make a breakthrough discovery
Remember when everyone on your news feed was dumping buckets of ice on their head to raise money and awareness for ALS? Well, the campaign raised $115 Million in six weeks!
Our Zone family even participated in the fundraiser…
$1 million from the ALS Association was donated to The University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Project MinE, and their team of scientists were able to discover the gene that is responsible for ALS. They identified it as NEK1 and with further knowledge and understanding of it, they could potentially treat sporadic and familial ALS!
I guess these silly viral campaigns really work!
