Modern Rock Mixtape :: March 23, 2012
You may or may not have noticed that the Modern Rock Mixtape was on a bit of a hiatus. I’ll be honest in saying that it felt good to take a bit of a break. But getting back into the studio – escaping for that hour and losing myself in my DJ rig – made me very happy.
I’m also very proud to announce the Mixtape’s brand new partnership with Wolf/Sheep Arthouse. This means a ton of wickedly-awesome things but something I’m really stoked about is that it opens the door for me to be able to collaborate with local DJ Hero, Murge! Now if you take my rinky-dink setup and disc jockey skills and multiply it by a bajillion, you have Murge. His kung fu is strong and I’m so excited to be able to collaborate with him and get his contributions to the show!
Now, let’s get to the new mix…
I dug up a few new remixes I’ve been into lately. I started and ended the set with two of the biggest songs currently on The Zone’s playlist (“Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye & “We Are Young” by fun.) and to be honest, I was getting pretty tired of hearing remixes of Gotye’s hit, “Somebody That I Used To Know”. Yes, some of them were pretty good but people were crapping out remixes of that song left, right and centre – almost so much that I was starting to forget how the actual song sounded! Then along came the Funk Hunters. They released a wicked remix of the song that included a bit of dubstep and then transitioned into drum and bass. It was so good that I wanted to start with the track and not add or change a single thing about it.
I received a few e-mails and Facebook messages from Zoners requesting a few songs on my next Mixtape including the new Sam Roberts, some Cake and some Sublime so I thought I’d attempt to work those tracks in. And a couple other tracks to note in the mix are the songs remixed by JPOD, not so much because of the tracks themselves, but I’ve got such a man crush on JPOD “the Beat Chef” because his mixes are so damn good. I challenge you to stay still when you hear them. And it’s worth mentioning…the Bran Van 3000 song he did with the Funk Hunters, they did in the back of a car while on a road trip! Hearing some Bran Van 3000 put me in the 90s mood so I threw in one of my fave songs from the 90s from Arrested Development…I know…not modern rock, but good nonetheless!
