The first punk record I ever owned was The Dead Kennedys' In God We Trust, Inc. I was 14 years old, and it changed my life. Up until then, I had no idea that music could be so . . . real.
The first punk gig I ever attended was Nomeansno at the Cedar Hill Rec Centre. It was an all-ages show, and it blew my young mind. Being a teenager in Victoria in the mid '80s, I was unaware that I was witnessing the final gasp of the first wave of Western Canadian punk rock. All I knew is that I was having a blast.
I never really 'looked' like a punk; I never had a mohawk, never wore a leather jacket (although I did have an army green trenchcoat for awhile) But I definitely lived the lifestyle.
What has always appealed to me about punk rock music is the flat-out aggression, the distrust and hatred of authority, and I especially love the sense of humour that has always come along with it, too. Punk music is the most honest style of music there is. No poetic metaphors, no vague references and no sappy love songs. Just in-your-face, no holds barred music from the soul. And if you don't like it, f**k off. Who cares?
I hope this show will appeal to hardcore punk fans, as well as those discovering this music for the first time. The biggest joy (and relief) for me with this show, is how it has been embraced by the local punk scene in Victoria, a scene which I think is as strong now as it has ever been.
I want the show to always be a mix of classic & new punk, while providing a showcase for local talent as well. I've already managed to land some big-time interviews and supporters, and there are lots more to come. I have some big ol' plans for the future of The Punk Show.
So, thanks for listening, and please continue to spread the word!
