Giorgio Estephan and Brayden Burke had 3 point nights, while Stuart Skinner made 36 saves to backstop the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-2 win over the visiting Victoria Royals, snapping their two game win streak.
Tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes, the ‘Canes scored the next four, two in the 2nd and two more in the third.
“Not good enough,” said Royals Head Coach Dave Lowry,
“This was a game were we wanted to see where we were as a team. Quite frankly the compete level was nowhere near the level it needs to be at.”
The Royals pressed hard in the third out-shooting the ‘Canes 18-6 in the final frame and 38-27 overall, but weren’t able to get enough pucks past Skinner.
The club won 5-1 in Medicine Hat the night before.
“We haven’t been very good the second night of back to back games. This is an area we will address and if it’s conditioning – I’ll make sure it gets fixed.” Said Lowry.
Jack Walker and Jared Dmytriw got the goals for Victoria, both on breakaways.
Royals netminder Griffen Outhouse stopped 19 of 23 before being relieved by Dylan Myskiw who turned aside 3 of 4.
“There’s a price to pay to win and this is a tough building to play in, and win in.” said Lowry,
“I think our guys really underestimated how hard it is to come in here and play…and we weren’t ready, and our top players tonight weren’t as good as they have to be.”
Estephan had two goals and an assist, while his linemate Burke struck once and added two helpers. Egor Babenko struck for a pair of goals.
Victoria defenseman Brayden Pachal fought Ryan Vandervlis in the 2nd period.
Rookie forward Erik Florchuk was named to Hockey Canada’s roster for the upcoming U17 tournament from October 30th – November 5th in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
The Royals fall to 4-5 on the season but are 3-2 on their 6 game in 10 night road trip which wraps up Friday against the Oil Kings (3-4-1-0) in Edmonton.
