I just started playing BioShock Infinite (on my PC via Steam), and whoa.
It’s beautiful. The scene is set in an alternate 1912 America, in a steampunky city in the sky, and the architecture, costumes, and design is glorious.
Additionally, the music you hear from the vintage radios is perfectly chosen. This is a world I’d love to wander around in. Well, before people start shooting.
It’s uncomfortable. Did someone say “white-only washrooms?” Yeah, the game touches (more like punches) on the themes of racism, and you’ll quickly uncover some pretty horrible conditions for non-white folk beneath the shiny façade of Columbia.
It’s bloody. No two ways around it. After the initial exploratory eyegasm of design and colour, things escalate quickly and, during the mêlées, very splat-y, sometimes crunchy, and often firey. A bit of desensitization is needed. Thankfully, I love The Walking Dead.
The reviews on this game kept pulling at my curiosity. I’m not much of an FPS’er, but the storyline, the atmosphere, the voice acting, the sound design, the detail, the weaponry (both handheld and psychokinetic) . . . it’s all so well done that I just had to jump in.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to draft up a Skyline/Skyhook plan to BC Transit. That’d be the best way to get to work . . .
