Popular positive rockers The Mowgli’s have an interesting spelling of their name…. they use an apostrophe.  It always seemed odd to me, but I’m no expert.  So I asked an expert…. Here is what UVic English professor Jamie Dopp has to say about The Mowgli’s apostrophe.

Whether the apostrophe is correct or not depends on context, of course . .
. .

From the looks of it, I suspect it’s probably incorrect.  An apostrophe
signals possession, so for it to be correct, the implication of the name
would have to be that the band belongs to “The Mowgli”.  Possible–but
unlikely.  (Though it is a sign of having really made it in life to have
the word “The” added to your name, like, “The Dylan” . . . somehow I doubt
that’s what they are going for.)  The name said aloud just sounds like the
plural of Mowgli . . .  ”The Mowglis”.  So . . . incorrect.

A possibility to be considered, though, is that apostrophe might be
deliberately incorrect, as a form of provocation.  This is actually quite
a common device in some kinds of contemporary poetry.  The idea is to
introduce some kind of grammatically incorrect element (like a comma where
there shouldn’t be one . . . as in “like a, comma where shouldn’t be one)
in order to disrupt our normally only half-attentive way of reading.  In a
way, the error forces you to pay better attention.  It’s like: what??
Isn’t that apostrophe wrong???

With a band name that contains a literary reference, I wouldn’t put it
past them.

and Brandy found THIS article where they explain the apostrophe.  ”Our friend had an amazing wolf dog named Mowgli. It always felt that we kind of belonged to him and we were Mowgli’s people (hence the apostrophe in our name)”

Then The Mowgli’s drummer Andy Warren took the time to write in to say, “The Go Go’s did it, so why not? Also without it, it phonetically sounds like Mow-gliss. And that’s just awkward.”

Still looks funny to me, but there we have it.

Craig Gass is a comedian and impersonator who will be in Victoria to perform on Friday, June 21st at Club 9one9.  Craig has been doing standup since 1993.  He is has been all over the place from the Howard Stern Show, to Sex and the City (Season 5,episode 4, “Cover Girl”), Saturday Night Live, Family Guy…. all over the place.
