Victoria Folk/Rock band, The Archers, were crowned Youthinks “BC’s Best Teen Band†in Vancouver in April 2011 and won Victoria’s “Garage Band Live†title in May 2011. They have gone on to put out their debut EP in August 2011, “Much More Than Merry Men”, by entertaining 250 people at the Mary Winspear Centre, receiving CBC Radio airplay and continuing to draw large crowds of all ages since.
The five friends creating this unique Indie-Folk/Rock sound include Ethan Caleb, Sandy Hughes, Liam McLaren, Liam Moes and Robert McMullen. They pride themselves in their ability to be multi-talented musicians, songwriters and performers. The Archers share the roles of guitar, piano, bass, drums, mandolin, banjo and multiple other percussion instruments, creating, through this trade off of instruments, an impressive and versatile sound. Audiences enjoy their fresh Folk resonance, compelling harmony, and fantastic energy.
The band was formed in early 2010 by Sandy Hughes and Ethan Caleb. After a few months the two songwriters grew tired of their empty acoustic sound and set out to find a drummer and a bass player. Before too long they found a very reliable rhythm section comprised of Liam Moes on drums and Liam McLaren on bass. In September of 2010, Liam McLaren was moved from his roll as bass player to playing piano, guitar, and mandolin, and Robert McMullen joined the band as bassist. Since then the band has grown exponentially and have succeeded in more ways than they expected.
They were direct support at Rifflandia Festival 2011 for We Are They City, played Fringe Festival opening for The Fruit Bats, TedX Youth Conference, Victoria’s Canada Day in the Inner Harbour, FolkWest Fundraiser, Earth Day and many high schools and benefit concerts. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with musicians such as: Steven Page, Kim Churchill, Doug and The Slugs, Mike Edel, and Oliver Swain. They are heading out for a 2 week tour of BC/AB tour in May and just recorded their single, Cathedrals, that will be released this spring on iTunes. There EP has been played on several CBC Radio stations across Canada.
The adventures of this young and up and coming band have just begun.
The Archers have just returned from their first tour across BC and Alberta. They are looking forward to their next in the fall of 2012.
Later in June The Archers will play with Jon and Roy along with Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother) at their CD release party at St. James Hall in Vancouver. They will also be playing in Victoria on the Legislature lawn on Canada Day.
