The Day He Quit – Chained To The Sky

When a new group emerges on the music scene with a distinct sound it is sure to turn a few heads. The Day He Quit has truly created a trademark style with their debut album, Chained To The Sky. Having eerie intros, intricately layered guitar riffs and catchy melodies combined with clear and strong vocals this alternative rock epic has a quality of character that speaks to the power inside us all. Chained To The Sky shines a light on musicality in rock’s new era and the pursuit of perfection in both the song writing and production.

On Chained To The Sky, The Day He Quit showcases their knack for rocking out combined with strong melodies and a song writing talent that is rarely seen. The music features the solid hard-rock rhythm of Dave Wiebe (drums) and Brent Chauvin (bass), strong guitar – from the equally capable Jason Henricksen and Jeremy Young – and is rounded out with a full sound courtesy of the keyboards (also Henricksen). Put that together with Shane Murphy’s lyrics – which bring a positive message that reflects the freedom of choice and expression gained by the band from growing up on Vancouver Island – and you get the kind of modern rock that is both edgy and radio friendly.

Songs on Chained To The Sky range from the West Coast Rock of The Time Flies to the merging of two song concepts and alternate time signatures of Way Too Easy to the ballad Where Maps Don’t Go featuring students of the University of Victoria’s music program on orchestra strings. All said, the album features 50 inspirational rock-filled minutes that are engaging from front to back.
Chained To The Sky was written and arranged by The Day He Quit and recorded at Victoria’s Infinity Studios with producer/engineer Adam Sutherland (The Armchair Cynics, THESET, Acres of Lions, The Perfect Trend). It was mastered by Dave Collins of Dave Collins Mastering (Linkin Park, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Bruce Springstein) in Los Angeles.

According to The Day He Quit, the individual search for a path through life’s many adventures is an inspiration for their music and that is reflected in their songs. The concept behind the album’s title was taken from a quote by legendary folk singer Bob Dylan which reads, “No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky.” The band unanimously agreed that this concept helped tie together the imagery they had pictured for their music – inspiring motivation in those who feel restrained for no reason but their own fear of failure.

The Day He Quit Live

Fans of The Day He Quit have come to expect a few trademarks when they see a live performance:
1. Shane Murphy will be barefoot on stage.
2. The Band will communicate with the audience, drawing them into the show and sharing their energy.
3. There will be hard rocking guitar solos from both Jeremy and Jason.
4. The Day He Quit will leave it all on the stage and walk off drenched with sweat with smiles on their faces.

The Day He Quit has set about easily winning the hearts and minds of their local music scene by providing them with consistently quality live rock shows. Their high-energy stage presence is unique and exciting, making it clear that these guys love to perform. They have fun and their energy is contagious.

About The Band

Biding their time and doing it right, The Day He Quit has emerged from the rainy harbour city of Nanaimo, BC. You could call it the classic story of high school buddies starting a band in their parent’s basement. That is where The Day He Quit began as a twinkle in the eyes of Jason Henricksen, Jeremy Young and Brent Chauvin. But nothing significant materialized until a few years and beers later.

In 2007 the three friends recruited drummer Dave Wiebe and a temporary vocalist. Shortly after, they performed some of the songs they had written at a local Battle of the Bands hosted by Got Pop? Productions and The Cambie, Nanaimo. The competition had multiple rounds, lasted several months and marked the first live performances by The Day He Quit. They placed second and immediately gained fans in the local music scene.

The only thing the band was missing was a vocalist they really clicked with. Enter Shane Murphy. Armed with a new front man and new material, The Day He Quit entered the 2008 Battle of the Bands and was victorious. This success served to fuel their song-writing and they began preparations to put out an album – to be Chained To The Sky (released December, 2009).

Most recently The Day He Quit has played many shows in their local scene, sharing the stage with a variety of bands ranging from The Armchair Cynics to Ninja Spy. Competing with over 20 acts, they won another Got Pop? Productions Battle of the Bands, in late 2009, gaining some well-deserved cash, the opportunity to have a music video produced by SHAW TV, a photo shoot from EOT Productions, an opening spot for a high-profile band in a Got Pop? Show as well as inclusion on Got Pop’s Volume 4 compilation CD.

From early 2007 to now, The Day He Quit has made every effort to ensure their music is something to be proud of. Their growing cohort of fans will back that up.

What does the future hold?

The Day He Quit is currently recording a music video to support their debut album as well as planning a tour of Beautiful BC for the fall of 2010. The band continues to work hard – building a solid fan base and always writing new songs. Their goal: to quit their day jobs and play music full-time. With a name like The Day He Quit, it seems fitting.
