David Tendeck made 37 saves to backstop the Vancouver Giants (7-8-2-2) to a 4-1 win over the visiting Victoria Royals (14-6-1-0) Saturday night.
“…They’re goalie played very well,” said Royals Head Coach Dan Price,
The Giants took a 2-1 lead into the third, before adding a power play goal to go up 3-1 before sealing it with an empty net goal.
“Overall it was a little bit of a scrambly game, I was happy with the offensive possession. I think defensively we need to tighten up…full credit to Vancouver they played really hard and they earned the victory.”
Victoria out shot Vancouver 38-26, with 14 in the first and 15 in the second period.
The Royals got their lone marker from rookie Igor Martynov, set up by Jared Legien who had 6 shots on goal.
“I thought we had a lot of scoring chances, a lot of puck possession and some great looks both 5 on 5, on the power play and shorthanded…” added Price.
Giants leading scorer Ty Ronning had 2 goals and an assist, defenseman Dylan Plouffe added 3 helpers and Brad Morrison a goal and an assist. James Malm was credited with the winner.
Victoria was 0 for 4 on the power play, while Vancouver went 1 for 5.
It was the Giants first win over the Royals in 5 tries this season. Victoria had their 2 game win streak snapped, and were held to a single goal for the first time this season. Vancouver has points in 3 straight (2-0-1-0) all against BC Div foes.
Griffen Outhouse suffered the loss stopping 23 of 26 including a couple Grade ‘A’ chances off Tyler Benson.
Tendeck stoned Matthew Phillips on a first period breakaway, and made a remarkable goal line toe stop off Chaz Reddekopp in the middle frame when the game was tied at 1-1.
Reddekopp played in his 250th career game. Tarun Fizer returned to the line up after missing 13 games due to injury.
Tyler Soy had an 8 game point streak snapped, Ryan Peckford’s 5 game streak came to an end.
Up next Victoria entertains Jared Dmytriw and his Red Deer Rebels Tuesday night.
