Dillon Dube scored twice including the overtime winner on a 4 point night, as the Kelowna Rockets defeated the Victoria Royals 4-3 Saturday night, to run their win streak to 7 games.
Dube’s overtime goal came just :19 seconds into the extra frame, while on the power play.
“Pretty tough loss to take losing in overtime that way – but (the Royals) went for it, and you can’t fault their effort.” Said Royals Assistant Coach Dan Price
The Royals were playing their 4th game in 5 nights, and were short – only dressing 5 defenseman.
“The players really dug down, they found energy, they really wanted that game,
and now we need to correct those errors that can make the difference in the game, and come out on the rights side of it next time.”
The Royals were without the injured Tyler Soy, Chaz Reddekopp, and Ryan Peckford. Also not dressed were defenseman Mitch Prowse and Ralph Jarratt.
Victoria got a pair of goals from Dante Hannoun, including the only one of the third to force overtime. Regan Nagy added a single.
“I really liked us 5 on 5…” quipped Price.
Kelowna was 3 for 7 on the power play, while Victoria was 1 for 6.
“We got the one massive goal late to tie it up late, so it was good to see the power play rewarded for that…” said Price on Hannoun’s tying marker,
“We need to eliminate the errors that cause the penalties, the mental errors and lack of discipline that put Kelowna on the power play.” Added Price when asked about the penalty kill.
Michael Herringer earned the win stopping 24 of 27, while rookie Dylan Myskiw kicked out 31 of 35 in the overtime loss.
The Royals who have clinched a playoff birth will seed no higher than the second Wild Card spot they currently hold. They sit 2 point ahead of the Winterhawks who hold the 2nd Wild Card spot in the West.
The Rockets remain 2nd in the Division, 2 back of the Cougars and 3 ahead of the Blazers.
Victoria is winless in 4 on their 5 game BC Division road trip which concludes at Vancouver on Tuesday. The Royals then face the Silvertips in a home and home to wrap up the regular season.
