Victoria got to within one in the third, as Matthew Phillips scored his 40th of the year, orchestrated by Jack Walker. The Tigers added the insurance marker into the empty net.
“I thought we were on our heels in the first period,” said Lowry who’s club was outshot 12-2 after 20 minutes,
“Give Medicine Hat credit, they play fast and that’s the way they play…we didn’t generate enough but I liked the way we stayed with It, and didn’t chase the game after that.”
Griffen Outhouse was named first star in the loss, making 30 saves.
Victoria was without the injured Tyler Soy and Ryan Peckford, along with Jared Dmytriw serving the first of a 3 game suspension.
“Being short the guys we were, we’re not going to make excuses. I liked our compete level and how hard we played.” Said Lowry.
The Royals went 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Tigers went 0 for 3.
“If we capitalize on the power play, probably a different hockey game,” said Lowry who’s club had a 5 on 3 early in the second period.
Medicine Hat got goals from Gary Haden, Matt Bradley off his skate for the eventual winner, and Steve Owre into the empty net.
Phillips became just the second Royals to score 40 or more in a season, doing it in his 56th game. Tyler Soy had 40 last season in 66 games, ending with 46. The franchise record is 51 held by Ryan Howse of the Chilliwack Bruins.
The Tigers even the season series at 1-1, after falling at home 5-1 in October.
The Royals suffered a second consecutive set back, while kicking off their 3 game Central Division road swing.
Victoria looks to snap a 2 game skid in Lethbridge on Friday.
