Kaid Oliver scored the game winner and Griffen Outhouse made 26 saves to help the visiting Victoria Royals edge the Kelowna Rockets 2-1 Friday night.
“I thought our preparation, the way we started the game, given everything that we went through yesterday and how long it took us to get here…” said Head Coach Dave Lowry who’s club sat put on the shut down Coquihalla for almost 4 hours due to severe weather,
“I was really proud of the way our guys prepared to start the game, but stayed with how way we have to play to win.” Lowry added.
The Royals came out physical and hard, dictating the play and out shooting the Rockets 8-4 after 20 minutes, leading 1-0.
“I thought we had a lot of guys that elevated their physical play…and did a really good job with our discipline.” Said Lowry
Jack Walker opened the scoring in the first, beating Michael Herringer on the glove side. Herringer also made 26 saves in the loss.
Kelowna countered with 15 second period shots, but Outhouse stopped them all.
“We need our goaltender to be good, we don’t need him to be great every night, but we need him to make the saves when he has too…” Said Lowry.
“The last few games he’s given us a chance to win and he’s made the saves at the right time.”
Outhouse, along with the Royals had gone 147:08 without allowing a goal.
Rookie Oliver scored midway through the 3rd to take a 2-0 lead, before Nolan Foote struck on the power play with under 5 minutes left to make things interesting.
Royals defenseman Chaz Reddekopp drew an assist, extending his point streak to 10 games and 13 points (4g 9a).
Victoria won their 3rd in a row and have points in 4, keeping pace with both Kamloops and Kelowna who share a 4 point lead in the BC Division.
The Royals were 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Rockets went 1 for 5.
Victoria evens the series at 2 apiece against Kelowna and will meet for a pair on the Island Jan. 11th and 13th.
Victoria visits Kamloops Saturday night at 5 pm.
