2016 has certainly been a memorable year for The Zone’s Mixtape. I have had the honour of creating and sharing a bunch of mixes that I’ve personally had fun creating, some that I was honoured to craft around a few musical influences of mine and some that were a therapeutic way for me to deal with the loss of a few musical icons.
I’m pleased to be able to share these mixes with you now (I’ve also made a few of them downloadable).
My Tribute Mix to David Bowie
Bowie’s death was sad, yes. But the way he went was a true testament to his devotion to his art and creativity. Shortly before leaving us, he released his farewell album, Blackstar (which is his 25th album and a masterpiece in its own right). His creativity inspired me to create this mix and I’d love to re-share it with you to stream and download for free.
My Tribute Mix to Prince
This loss definitely stung a little. I remember covering the morning and half of the midday show that day so I got off work at noon. But when I left the station, I had “Purple Rain” stuck in my head and I couldn’t get it out. I figured the only remedy for that is to jump on my turntables and craft a tribute mix to Prince.
My Interview/Mix with The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff
Talk about your cool experiences! Getting to meet and interview one of the men who inspired me to learn how to be a DJ. Jeff and his #VinylDestination crew came to town in early July to play the Phillips Backyard Weekender and not only did I get to bring him on stage and hang out with him and his crew, I also had the honour of speaking to him on the phone the day before the show. I put the weaved a mix around the interview to switch things up and here’s how that sounded.
Miller SoundClash 2016 Competition Mix
I do this pretty well every year and figured I’d give this another shot. I’ll be 100% honest right now and admit to you that I’ve never actually been to Las Vegas. And now that I’ve got two young kids at home, I don’t see myself going anytime soon. But if I can make an excuse for myself to go (like, a DJ gig) then I might as well. And that’s what this mix was – a chance for me to win an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas and play at an MGD party. I didn’t win, but in the end we got a pretty cool mix out of the deal.
My sons’ favourite holiday has to be without a doubt Halloween. I probably listened to Halloween music way more this year than any other year…not to mention watched Ghostbusters more times than I can count. Here’s the mix I did in the Mixtape this past Halloween.
Holiday Mixtape 2.0
Last year, I did a mashup of some of my favourite holiday-themed remixes. Well, I decided to add to it. I took most (well, pretty much ALL) of the tunes I used last year and super-sized the a Christmas mix for 2016!
Thank you SO much for your support and kind words for my (third) baby, The Zone’s Mixtape, over the past 12 months! I’m excited to see what sort of mixes 2017 will bring! Make sure you check out my Facebook page for live gig updates and streaming video of future Friday mixes! –Boitano
