Week 3 and the intensity is rising. Most of the contenders on the red team have had their first taste of sparring as the last half of this week, we were able to spar a bit with our coaches.
With this not being my first training camp, the experience has felt quite a bit different from 2013 as I have more of an idea of what to expect during camp and I know what goals I need to set for myself leading up to the fight. Reaching my goals definitely calls for me to put in extra work (well, every contender should be putting in extra work outside of training camp) and while it’s not easy, it’s certainly necessary. This is one of the things I say to myself on a regular basis. It’s called an “affirmation”. It was an idea that was given to me by my old coach. He told me to have certain quotes or motivational ideas that I would say to myself during training to drag myself out of the mud when things start to become tough. I’ve written this (along with, “pain is temporary…” a my favourite quote from Eric Thomas) down in many places (including the inside of my boxing gloves).
Sometimes the hard part is balancing the extra work I put in with both my job here at The Zone and (more importantly) time with my family at home. But I’m lucky that both my work family and home family have been incredibly supportive at finding ways to make it work.
This year, I’ve been lucky enough to acquire an outside Fight 4 The Cause sponsor…I say lucky because there are perks that come along with the specific sponsor I’ve acquired. This year, my sponsor is Atlas Health Therapy and they’ve been a major supporter of the Fight 4 The Cause Charity Boxing Classic for years. This year, they’ve also decided to sponsor a fighter (which is me) and boy do they ever take care of me!
Huge shoutout to my #Fight4TheCause sponsor Atlas Health Therapy for making me a deliciously rejuvenating post-workout shake this morning! Not only are they taking great care of me, but they’re looking after all of the contenders who are putting their bodies on the line for four local charities! Important tip for consuming a post-workout shake: Remove your mouth guard before taking a sip!

Aside from often providing me delicious post-workout shakes, Tamara from Atlas is working with me to ensure I’m feeling my best during training camp, avoiding injuries and helping my body achieve maximum performance. And they’re not only helping me, all of the contenders have access to discounted services at Atlas and this week, Atlas even hosted a health fair at Studio 4 Athletics for the contenders.
