I’ll admit, as a Rage Against The Machine fan, I’ve been waiting for this tune for a while! So it’s pretty hard to remain un-biased as the Music Director of a radio station.
The “supergroup” (consisting of members of Rage Against The Machine – sans Zack De La Rocha – with B-Real from Cypress Hill and DJ Lord & Chuck D from Public Enemy) formed earlier this year and it’s no surprise that they drop their first single on the first day of the Republican National Convention.
Upon their formation, Tom Morello declared to Rolling Stone magazine: “We’re an elite task force of revolutionary musicians determined to confront this mountain of election year bullshit, and confront it head-on with Marshall stacks blazing.”
Funny story…back in 2008, I was hanging out in our old P.D.’s office (talking about Sara P), she gets a phone call from a record label, has a shocked look on her face, puts the person on hold and looks up at me and tells me, “go interview Tom Morello.” Apparently, the original interviewer (Jeremy Baker) called in sick that day and everyone completely forgot that he was supposed to interview the guitarist from Rage Against The Machine about his new solo album at the time, The Nightwatchman.
I put together a couple snippets from the interview that relate to his motivation for forming Prophets of Rage:
