As first covered in the January 23, 2013 National Code for Wireless geek-out, the CRTC (the governing body over radio and TV in Canada), implemented their National Code for Wireless Services today, and, among the highlights:
- Three-year contracts still exist, but are now paid off in two years, allowing for penalty-free cancellation
- Customers can cap their monthly data charges capped to prevent surprise exorbitant bills
- Subsidized phones can be unlocked after 90 days; phones bought outright can be unlocked immediately
- Contracts which are easy to read and understand must be provided
